This month: Rivers Plasketes and Courtney Spieker in “Relations” at the SVA Gallery

Starting today and running for the next two weeks, VCS students Rivers Plasketes and Courtney Spieker will have some of their work on display in the group exhibition “Relations” at the SVA Gallery. Here is a description of the show, taken from the exhibition overview on the SVA website:

School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents “Relations,” an exhibition of photography, sculpture and drawing by SVA students and recent alumni featuring artworks commenting on the nature and scope of human relationships. Curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries, the exhibition will be on view August 2 -18 at the SVA Gallery, 209 East 23 Street, New York City.

The overview also contains the following descriptions of the works that Rivers and Courtney contributed:

Combining faded photographs of his childhood home with fragments of common construction material, Rivers Plasketes creates mixed-media collages. The artist begins his works with tattered images of furniture and domestic interiors, then overlays bits of tile, plywood and cutout tool forms to evoke nostalgia for the past.

Courtney Spieker’s wall sculptures explore her relationship with her grandmother. Using plaster casts of her own hands, the artist places her grandmother’s personal objects in the sculpted hands to interact with the past and honor family memories.

To see a slide show of some of the works in the exhibition and read about the other artists who are participating, see the exhibition overview at this link.

The opening reception for “Relations” will take place at the SVA Gallery on Monday, August 6 from 5 to 7 p.m., and is free and open to the public. The SVA Gallery is open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and is closed Sunday and federal holidays.
